The American Academy of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery Foundation (AAO-HNSF) is the national medical specialty association representing physicians worldwide who specialize in the care and medical and surgical treatment of health problems relating to the ear, nose, throat, and related structures of the head and neck.

Senior Manager, Public & Media Relations

Qualifications:

Undergraduate degree in Communications, English, Journalism, or related field is required. Advanced degree is preferred. Established background in professional relationships with media contacts required. Comprehensive writing experience encompassing medical press releases, feature articles, opinion/editorials, copy editing, and proofreading necessary. Supervisory experience preferred. Substantial experience in developing and implementing media relations programs in support of new medical research, patient information campaigns, and member support is desired. Accountability, attention to detail and follow-through essential. Must be able to work well with physician volunteers, Board members, executives, and staff, as well as with counterparts at other organizations. Some travel is required. 

Key Responsibilities:

Serve as Project Manager for Annual Meeting newsroom and public relations/media events.
Working with the Executive Leadership Team and the Senior Director of Communications, Academy members, and public relations entities to develop, coordinate, implement, and measure Academy and Foundation public relations activities including public educational campaign(s).
Provide leadership, and practice performance modeling by setting example of a senior manager.
Grow public affairs collaborative relationships and manage any large-scale efforts in this area when collaborative effort is appropriate.
Make recommendations to senior management on the implementation of public and media relations awareness activities.
Develop and maintain AAO-HNS/F Media and PR yearly calendar in conjunction with marketing team. 
Plan and implement new media initiatives designed to enhance AAO-HNS/F's standing as the premier organization for ENT related health news and information.
Main liaison for updating and creating new content for the AAO-HNS/F's web site in regards to media relations and PR functions.
Serve as the spokesperson with the media and public relations entity for the organization when appropriate and make use of business relationships within the industry to forward the AAO-HNS/F mission and goals.
Manage Media and Public Relations Budget.
Evaluate opportunities for media coverage and suggest appropriate Academy and Foundation actions.
Provide writing support for AAO-HNS/F publications, including online and print platforms. Serve as liaison to AAO-HNS/F Media and Public Relations committees.
Work with Committee chairs to plan and implement AAO-HNS/F public information campaigns Serve as lead in developing PR/Media campaigns—strategies and tactics to enhance understanding of otolaryngology to various audiences.
Manage national specialty awareness campaign Develop and maintain AAO-HNS/F and project press kits.
Plan and implement regular patient and public education campaigns on relevant topics. Prepare analysis of campaigns for each Boards of Directors' meeting. 

Specific Duties:

Write press releases for broadcast print and media. Answer press inquiries. Oversee and track interview process with otolaryngic specialists nationwide especially through the Board of Governors and Committees. Coordinate media interviews for AAO-HNS/F Officers, Board of Governors, and staff members. Maintain and update AAO-HNS/F media lists. Create and implement marketing and information release strategies that "target" selected media resulting in optimum coverage.
Oversee for PR purposes, the weekly e-newsletter and assist with production of other AAO-HNS/F publications Guide and assist with AAO-HNS/F new media and social networking and new media programs, including Facebook, Twitter, and blogs.
Work with public relations firms and other media contacts to organize and publicize media events.
Act as lead liaison with volunteers, allied organizations, public relations firms, and the public regarding public service campaign activities.
Operate News Room at AAO-HNSF meetings and other sister societies when appropriate. Assess member research findings (via annual meeting and research journal) for newsworthiness to the public and medical community. Publicize through the appropriate medium.
Lead the Media and Public Relations Strategy, including intake of PR projects, managing budgets and timelines. Provide articles and materials for publication in the Bulletin, as requested by the Senior Director, Communications.
Manage budget for Media and Public Relations activities, including decision regarding wire and clipping services, and campaign budgets.
Manage AAO-HNS/F outreach to public aligned with mission, and member engagement activities. Act as liaison for assigned committee(s).
May participate on an internal team, either through formal assignment, or on an ad hoc basis.
Work with Senior Director and other business unit supervisors to help evaluate and coach team members and provide input for yearly performance appraisals.
