International Outreach

What is the International Outreach?

International outreach, worldwide collaboration, and exchange of information and education are the goals for the international program of the Foundation and Academy. With its tradition of a century of education, the AAO-HNS/F is deeply involved in exchange of medical, scientific, and research information with otolaryngologists—head and neck surgeons around the globe.

In 1997, to address the growing international participation in many phases of AAO-HNS/F activities, the Board of Directors launched an ambitious initiative—the International Outreach Program. Under the energetic and capable leadership of the Coordinator for International Affairs, KJ Lee, MD, now joined by the Coordinator-elect, Gregory W. Randolph, MD, activities include:

International Corresponding Societies (ICS)
Jointly Affiliated Meetings
Jointly Sponsored Meetings
International Travel Grants
Guest Countries
Scientific Journal
Eugene N. Myers International Lectureship on Head and Neck Cancer

With a dramatic increase in international involvement in the Annual Meetings, the Board aimed to make the meetings friendlier and ensure an optimal experience to visitors from all over the world. It took such steps as hiring multi-lingual registration staff, Membership and Humanitarian booths, and a first-time attendees' orientation.

Jointly Affiliated Meetings Address a Wealth of Issues

To strengthen relations between each ICS society and the AAO-HNS/F, jointly affiliated meetings are held at the AAO-HNSF Annual Meeting or at the society’s National Congress. Meetings address a wide variety of topics ranging from managed care to resident training, from ethics in 21st century otolaryngology to international certification, from Board certification to research and clinical trials. The presentations on ethics were by John D. Casler, MD, Alfredo Rafael Dellaringa, MD, Thomas P. Gonsoulin, MD, G. Richard Holt, MD, MPH, and Shirley S. N. Pignatari, MD.

The AAO-HNS/F arranged meetings in 1998 with the Spanish Society, in 1999 with the Brazilian and South Korean Societies and the Hong Kong College, in 2000 with the Colombian and Portugese Societies and the Mexico Federation (FESORMEX), and in 2001 with the Brazil Societies of Otolaryngology and of Head and Neck Surgery and the Lebanese Society.

Database of Otolaryngology Centers Developed

To help scholars plan their travels, the Academy has developed a database of U.S. Otolaryngology Centers willing to host a visit from one or more International Guest Scholars.

Some 60 ORL departments participate in the database, sharing their experience of hosting visiting fellows from overseas, whether to conduct research or simply observe for a short period. Departments are asked to note if their visiting fellow program specializes in a particular field, such as otology, rhinology, and voice disorders, or in particular procedures, such as endoscopic sinus surgery, or cochlear implants. The International Department invites international scholars who studied at ORL centers to share their views and experiences.

2008 Guest Countries Honored at Annual Meetings

This year registrants who reside in China, India, Ireland, and Russia receive $100 discount on Annual Meeting registration.
