Resident Leadership Grant Needs Assessment
Residents and fellows-in-training of the American Academy of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery (AAO-HNS) are the future of the specialty. The Board of Directors of the Academy has thus made it a priority to ensure that residents and fellows-in-training receive the medical, scientific, and practical exposure they need to excel. Residency training programs cannot afford to fund all of their residents to attend and participate in this important program requirement and thus look to the AAO-HNS to help fund resident's and fellows-in-training's meeting and travel expenses.

The AAO-HNS/F Annual Meeting, the Board of Governors (BOG) Spring Meeting, and the OTO Advocacy Summit (OAS) all offer otolaryngologists and other interested health professionals a series of unique and dynamic educational experiences designed to broaden and enrich their understanding of otolaryngology—head and neck surgery and to provide a foundation for continued learning. The Annual Meeting’s program format includes scientific and research sessions, instruction courses, mini-courses, and posters that will help participants maintain a continued awareness of accepted methods of diagnosis and treatment and will provide updates on new developments in the field. The BOG Spring Meeting and the OAS offer residents and fellows-in-training opportunities to experience the advocacy process, develop relationships with their leadership and legislators, provide an insightful look into the inner workings of the grassroots arm of the AAO-HNS, and to become informed about issues facing the specialty.

Recipients will receive up to $500.00 to help defray the costs associated with attending the AAO-HNS/F Annual Meeting or $350 to attend the BOG Spring Meeting/OAS. All applicants must be nominated by their training program director and/or program coordinator. There is no limit to the number of applicants training program directors and/or program coordinators can nominate but individual training programs can only be awarded a maximum of two (2) grants. Grants will be awarded in conjunction with resident’s level of participation in Academy programs (see selection criteria below).

Resident Leadership Grant Requirements
In order to be considered all applicants must be current resident or fellows-in-training members of the AAO-HNS and attending a residency program and/or fellowship in the U.S. or Canada.

Grant stipulations require all awardees attend the conference and must attend the Section for Residents and Fellows General Assembly and Miniseminar. Grant recipients must also stay within the reserved housing block. Information will be provided to grant awardees regarding the afforable hotel housing blocks.

Resident Leadership Grant Selection Criteria
An internal committee of staff reviews each application. All applicants must meet at least three (3) of the following 11 selection criteria (residents participating in more than three of the following areas are given first priority to receiving the grant).

• Must be a member in good standing
• Must submit an application within the deadline
• Residents serving on a committee
• Residents serving as the SRF training program representative
• Residents who are presenting a poster at the meeting
• Residents who are presenting a research/scientific paper at the meeting
• Residents who attended the BOG Spring Meeting and/or the OTO Advocacy Summit.
• Resident members who are first-time attendees
• Residents who have seniority in their training program and availability to attend (as identified by training program director and/or department chair)
• Residents who have attended previous meetings but never received an AAO-HNS/F resident leadership grant
• Residents serving in leadership positions are guaranteed a grant (SRF Governing Council and Appointed Officers) 

If grants are still available after the initial selection process, the process will start anew by selecting at least two (2) but no more than three (3) residents from each training program using the same criteria above. CORE grantees who have received funding through the research department will be given low priority in order to accommodate funding of residents who have not otherwise received funding.
