Institution-Based Audiology Facilities
The American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, Inc. maintains that audiologists based within institutions, regardless of ASHA certification, should only participate in auditory rehabilitation procedures when requested to do so by a physician, preferably an otolaryngologist -- the otological team member with the highest degree of training in the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the ear. All institutional hearing center activity, both auditory and vestibular, should be supervised by an otolaryngologist-head and neck surgeon who has medical qualification by virtue of his or her training to render a medical diagnosis, surgery, and therapy.
